5 Things to know about WJMC |
By Carina Christo
The Glass Box News was founded one day during WJMC by a group of girls dedicated to writing and journalism and wishing to carry on their friendships and connection to the summer program even months after. From a WJMC 2018 alum, here are some things you need to know if you’re planning on attending this summer.
1. It’s not a scam!!
When I first got my letter from WJMC in the mail, to be honest, I thought it was all a scam. I did some googling and decided to take the risk. Thank god I did because it was one of my favorite memories from the summer and the year.
2. You Don't Need to be Insanely Experienced in Journalism
Don’t be intimidated. It’s most likely you’re a great writer anyways. But at age 16 no one’s expecting you to write for the New York Times. Before I attended WJMC I had written a few articles for my school paper but I was way more into creative writing and didn’t know that much about journalism. But that’s okay!! It’s all an opportunity to grow.
3. Stay up to date on current events
Like I said above, you don’t have to be an expert. But, to make the most out of your time in D.C. it’s great to be informed on what’s happening around the world. Read from unbiased news sites like the New York Times, AllSides.com, your local paper or even listen to a podcast on the bus. It will make a difference!!
4. What to Wear?
D.C. is hot. And you won’t get sent home if you’re skirt is a few too many inches above your knees. That being said, try your best to look professional- it’s a good thing to practice and also makes you feel more professional!
5. Be Friendly
Personally, I’ve always been an introvert and I worried about making friends far away from home. Luckily, everyone was so nice from the minute I got off the plane. Make sure to introduce yourself to people and ask them about themselves. You’ll meet some really cool people and probably stay in touch long after.
